LearnToLive Australia is a night of comedy, food, photos and fun to raise funds for upcoming healthcare clinics and sustainable water projects in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

LearnToLive is a humanitarian organization that provides healthcare and education to communities world wide through the promotion of self-sustaining practices.  We envision people around the world living long, healthy and productive lives with the support of reliable healthcare and a sustainable lifestyle.

LearnToLive began with our first scout and excursion trip to North Sulawesi, Indonesia in August 2011. Since then we have run four successful clinics in local villages Sapa, Beringin, Likupang, and Bunaken. We are returning to these villages in July 2013 to run healthcare clinics, build rainwater collection systems and introduce an environmental curriculum into the schools. We have also recently returned from a scouting trip in Laos and Cambodia with some new and exciting partnership opportunities.

Dates:
LearnToLive health initiative 2013 will take place from July 27th to August 15th of this year. We give preference to those who can be a part of the entire journey from start to finish. Plan to leave the US ahead of schedule and stay on with us until we conclude our work. We will recommend particular flights into and out of Manado so our team can stick together.Overall Requirements/ Personality Considerations/Trip Conditions:
We are looking for flexible and intuitive individuals who will take initiative and roll with the punches: MDs, RNs, Eye Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacy Assistants, and generally radical people. Our work in North Sulawesi can be unpredictable, so it’s not for everybody, but it is sure to be a fulfilling experience for those with a can do attitude. You will be spending 20 days in North Sulawesi Indonesia with a team of about 40 people from all over the world. We will be base-camping at accommodations in the Manado area and driving to and from each of the 4 villages every day we have a clinic. A clinic will typically run for 3 days, then we will have a 2 day break in which we will resupply, travel to our next destination, and have a few planned field trips. We will spend a considerable amount of time traveling to and from the villages on subpar roads so keep this in mind of you get motion sickness. You will be expected to conduct yourself in a manner that is culturally sensitive and respectful for the land and the people of Indonesia.

Documentation:

Passport is required for travel to Indonesia. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry to the country. A 30 day visa for travel to Indonesia can be obtained upon arrival. Please also obtain personal travel insurance for this trip, as you will be required to sign a liability waiver upon acceptance to the team. Although no vaccinations are required for travel to Indonesia, we will advise which are recommended.Financial contribution:
All hotel accommodations and 3 meals a day will be planned for the team.
A $500 volunteer participation fee will be collected from each participant to cover partial room and board and travel within North Sulawesi. All other travel expenses into and out of Manado with be the participants’ responsibility. Student program fee- $1350.00

A look into our 2012 Indonesian Health Initiative, a short documentary that introduces the LTL 2012 INDO staff & volunteers. Watch this clip to get a good idea of what we’re accomplishing in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

MISSION
The mission of LearnToLive:Indo is to provide primary health care and early interventions to the people of North Sulawesi who are unable to travel or to pay for healthcare. A secondary goal is to inspire and create a learning environment for international healthcare workers so they may bring their experiences of Indonesia back to their country of origin and be better healthcare workers.

LOCATION
LearnToLive:Indo is based out of Manado in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. Manado is the main city in the region with a population of 450,000. We will have clinics set up in four different locations within the region: Beringin, Sapa, Bunaken and Likupang. Each clinic was open for five days, and allowed two days travel and set up time for the next location.

We met Novia in a town called Likupang, which is a coastal village on the northeast side of Sulawesi. This short documentary showcases just one of many patients we saw in the community. We hope this sheds light on what life is like and what health care concerns the residents have in this part on Indonesia.

Children are the ones that suffer first when there is little or no access to health care. In poor living and sanitation conditions children’s immune systems are not equipped to fight off common bacterial infections and viruses.

This is a portrait of children’s health in Likupang North Sulawesi and what LearnToLive is doing to educate parents and the community about keeping their children healthy.
